By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. – John 15:8, NKJV
God gets the glory, someone who could not pay us back gets the benefit, and we accept it as so because it mirrors what He did for us. That’s the imitation of the salvation formula. By sacrificing what was dear to Him, God extended His love towards us as He offered us something that we could never repay as hard as we tried and as much as we prayed[1]. The best option that we have is to imitate what He did by doing likewise for those who cannot repay us.
If it was about us, then then would be an expectation that we would know that we did what was right by what we got in return. However, God desires for us to grow to become more like Christ. That’s that perfecting process that Paul referenced over in Ephesians. The work that we do adds to the glory of the Father. In addition, it builds up the ranks of the faithful. In essence, it should limit the numbers of the faint-hearted and those who fall away.
To become Christ-like is the only thing in the whole world worth caring for, the thing before which every ambition of man is folly and all lower achievement vain. – Henry Drummond
