Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105 (NRSV)

This can be a very dark world.  Darkness seems to carry an eerie air as it overtakes the day or as it consumes a room.  Darkness can bring about some hidden fears that we once thought we had conquered from our past, but the darkness helps them emerge again with a fury.

God has help for us despite the darkness, though.

A Lamp to My Feet

Lamps and lanterns are held in front of you so that you can see your way.  You can never get ahead of the lamp and you sure shouldn’t get too far away from it.  It is best to have your lamp at a low level so that you can see what’s ahead.  It could be a ditch.  There could be a cliff.  You could be walking into quicksand.

A lamp  will guide you despite the darkness.

A Light to My Path

Light penetrates darkness.  It illuminates all that falls under it.  Nothing is hidden when the light is shone on it.

Ever been on a dark pathway?

People start talking about the Boogie Man and all sorts of creepy stuff when the lights aren’t on or around, but let that light hit the scene and things that were once unseen become real images to you.  A lighted pathway can put us at ease a little bit because we will be able to see what lies ahead.  The path can be seen easily.  We don’t have to squint or feel around.  We can see things with our eyes and know that the pathway is lit for us, for our safety and for our sure-footed walk.

A light will show you the way despite the darkness.

I need God guiding me through his Word.  I need God showing   me the path to take according to His Word.  I need god’s Word  as both my lamp and my light, for my feet and my path.

He can do it for you despite the darkness.

. . . For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light – Luke 16:8

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light – Ephesians 5:8

We have to make an immediate decision.

I know that you were just expecting to some read some inspirational post on how to live as a Christian, skim a few pep-you-up verses or passages, then go on and live your life without any other bumps in the road.

That ain’t happening here.

You need to make a decision>  That’s right.   Just like all of the rest of us who profess the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and claim to have His Spirit alive and dwelling within them, you need to decide what you will do for today and from now on.

Will you live as a faithful child of God?

Or, will you live as one of “the sons of this world?”

You need to make a decision.

Are you going to live like the example in the Word or the example of the world?

Are you ready to live like the one who sacrificed everything to have a relationship with you, even while you were still a sinner?

Are you able to  walk as a child of light? If so, then come out of the darkness.  You do not even have to open your mouth.  Just take a step, and then another one and so on.  The rest will begin to come as you adjust to living among the “children of light.”

So what is it going to be?

You have to make a decision.

How will you live. . .?

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”c Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky  – Philippians 2:14-15 (NIV)

Imagine if you would a place of sanctified bliss where the children of God lived without fault and without grumbling or arguing.  Paul painted the picture that such a state of being for the children of God would make room for them to shine like stars in the sky.  That’s a beautiful picture if you can capture a glimpse of it in your mind.

Now try it on for size.

Let the Lord use you to end disputes, bickering, and complaining, even petty arguments.  How? Just don’t do anything related to those actions.  Take all of your actions without giving cause for such reactions to arise.  Make team members really feel like part of the team.  Adjust your attitude about all things related to the activity prior to taking any action.  Pray for God to cleanse you and purify your spirit as you go into the work that He has set aside for you to accomplish in His name.

Do it like that a live as a child of God, blameless and pure. . . without fault in a warped and crooked generation.  Do it so that no one can say that you have left a bad mark on God’s name.  Do it and do it without any shame on you or God the Most High.

Do it like that so that you can shine like stars in the sky.

Help Someone Else to See

Paul’s experience was for his eyes to be opened as if scales fell from them.

Bartimaeus experienced it after being summoned by the Savior.

The ageless hymn Amazing Grace says: “Was blind but now I see.”

How beautiful it is for darkness’ shroud to be lifted and eyes becoming opened to see the light.  It is truly amazing that the Lord can do such miraculous things.  Yet, He said that we would do greater works.

If we are but mere reflections of the True Light as John wrote in John 1:9, then how can our little itty bitty lights cause someone else to see?

Jesus said so.

You do not have to take a seminary course or do an exhaustive word study to figure it out.

Jesus said so.

He called us the “light of the world.” He said that we would do greater works.  He died and rose again, then said that His disciples would serve as global witnesses for Him.

Are you ready to serve as the light of the world?

Jesus said so.

I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. – John 12:46 (KJV)

Jesus came as a light into the world.  He came as light to shed light and so that no one who believes in Him will live in darkness.  He was the Light that men failed to comprehend, according to John’s gospel.

We are followers of the Lord.  He have seen the light and we are to act as the light of the world.

But do we live so?

Are we living like the light of the world or are we hiding it under cover in the midst of darkness?

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
– Matthew 5:14-16

Jesus called it as He saw it.  He was straight forward and straight up about many things.

Yeah, He oftentimes used parables to teach the people.  What He was doing was using something that people were familiar with or understood well to share a life lesson in a subtle manner.

But He was usually straight out about things.

Ye are the light of the world. . .

The light of the world is a twofold metaphor.

The Light is Seen by Others

If we are the light of the world, then we should be shining as the light.  That’s the nature of light.  Light shines.  Jesus shared for us to live as the light and not hide our light under a bushel.

The Light Helps Others to See

. . . it giveth light unto all that are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Others can see when you act as the light.  Others can see when you live as the light.  Others can see when you let your light so shine.

When you living as the light of the world, you can shine brightly and help others see the Truth and the Way.
