Youth Outreach

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.- 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

Some time ago, as we were developing a evangelism program called Youth-N2-Action, I shared the general concept with my children. They were in middle school at the time and found it difficult seeing themselves as evangelists. They had tagged along with me and had learned a lot about sharing the gospel through good works with the homeless and others, even door-to-door evangelism. Yet, I realized in that one conversation that they had been educated about salvation and evangelism methods but not edified to the point where they were comfortable and confident sharing it with their peers. Sadly, they are not alone when we look at the state of many of our Christian youth today.

We tend to sell our youth short. I say “we” because I have been guilty of it myself as well. Yet, there is a biblical solution. We need to engage our youth to become equipped and empowered to share the Word where they have influence. We need to teach and train young people to share the gospel on their own level and in their own way.

Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive.- Titus 3:14 (NLT)

The stats don’t tell it all. I was introduced to Christ as a teen. A friend approached me as I was shooting dice at school between classes and pronounced before all of my thugging and drugging buddies that he was going to pick me up for church that night. I laughed, but he came through and the Lord worked on me from there.

I believe that one day we will stop telling our teens what they shouldn’t do and who they shouldn’t hang around. We’ll start teaching and training them to be like Christ. Who ate with tax collectors and sinners? Who touched the untouchable and unclean? let them follow Jesus’ example and live out their faith. Teach them to share their faith with confidence. Help our youth to become ambassadors for Christ as they inspire and influence others for the sake of the Lord.

I am living, born-again proof that it works.

  1. Good Lord man, this is twice this week the whole “Jesus hung out with the sinners” message has hit my radar. What a coincidence (ha!). Thanks for this, I am glad I spent the time reading what you wrote.

I have a 10-year old ward who I need to train in the Way. This whole “let him be friends with whomever he wants” thing is a great target to aim at. He’s not ready yet (and honestly I’m not sure I’m ready either but that’s another topic). Please pray for me, my wife, and my ward “S”.

    Blessings!l

    1. I truly thank you for sharing. Man, God has something in the works with a 10-year old. Invest in him. I don’t mean finacially like savings account, food and shelter or saving for college. Invest your time and energy in letting him know that you love him, and then train him and teach him, so that you can trust him with and among others. Bless you. When he reflects on his time with you, the fruit will emerge by his words and deeds.
I truly thank you again for sharing. It touched me.

  2. WOW! That was simple but very powerfully effective. I lead the youth at my church and have been worrying a lot about the state of youth in the church. These numbers are very sobering but also call to action. Thank you for desiring to an teaching HOW TO LIVE as Christ intended. Blessings.

    1. Thank you. I pray that you disciple them to become wheat among the tares. God be with you. May what you’ve found here be helpful for what you desire to do with these young folks at your church. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I am a youth myself who really want to reach out to other who’s in my age group.I just need to start trusting in God more so when I am telling other people about God’s word.I just need more teaching and training but that’s something my church doesn’t offer. How can I have confidence when I am telling others about the word.

    1. Hey, Sister! I want to say thank you for your comment. Let me keep my reply brief and relevant.

The Bible speaks of the older teaching the younger, training up a child and such. Read Titus chapter 2’s opening verses where it speaks about older women leading younger women. That will help you see where the teaching and training should come in, especially among people of faith. If you’re not getting fed, feast on what you can and where you can. Go online. Check out http://www.ccel.org for Christian classics from the likes of E.M. Bounds (super way of explaining prayer), R.A. Torrey (faith, enlightenment and prayer are among a few of the subjects that this guy tears to shreds with every stroke of his pen) and Andrew Murray and C.H. Spurgeon (I love these two dudes; they make it plain and speak the truth about “soul-winning,” discipleship, and the Scriptures) and http://www.studylight.org or http://www.biblegateway.com for Bible study and devotionals; Youversion.com is out of this world with all of its bells and whistles like audio Bible, groups, “live” and other stuff. That’s so that you can take it in.

To share it and give it out is a little different. Start where you have influence. John chapter 1 shows us the simplicity of sharing our faith and discovery of Jesus with others. John the Baptist intoduces the Lamb of God to two of his own followers and the leave him for the Lamb. One of them was Andrew who goes and gets his own brother and brings him to meet the Messiah. (NOTE: The other one is the “disciple who the Lord loved” aka John the brother of James the sons of Zebedee) Philip has a personal encounter with Jesus and shares it with a friend from his community. His friend essentially says: “No way” per se and his response to the resistance is “Come and see.” The point is you can be vitally used in introducing someone to Jesus, but you start by starting where you have influence and going further from there. Keep in mind that Jesus was thirty when He launched His earthly ministry and the ones He initially called were youths, if not young adults.

Sister, I hope this helps you. I want you to be confident and courageous about it. Just talk to those whom you already know and those whom the Lord leads to you and leads you to as you come and go. Truly, I tell you, it can grow on you.

    2. FYI: Check out sites like http://www.urbanministry.oeg and relevant.tv. I think they’ll be helpful re: reaching out among your peers and sharing your faith. Once again, you share it based on having experienced it on a personal level.

I am a youth and I’m yet to discover who I am in CHRIST JESUS but I’ve once dreamt that a white staff which curved upward at the top was in my hand. I had groups of people following me and they demanded that I get the sit of Moses.
I actually saw Moses’ sit and I brought out money from my pocket and gave to them. They got the sit and brought it to me while I was sitted on my own personal sit, to sit on. I dreamt again that a big spanner was giving to me or
    I was holding it.
Pls pray for me in discovering myself in CHRIST. Thank you for your interest in the youth.

    1. Let God speak to you and hear (sense) where He is leading you. You are more than the future as a youth. You are here and now, so let Him work on you and through you to win souls by being the “new” you He creates by His Spirit. You are a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). Bless you.

  5. I just wanted to say god is good I was reading my on line bible I a came aross this. Today youth are needed in our church. But we need to meet them were there at or the he said we will not have them. Same thing is going on in my church there is a disconet with the youth. I wish I had the lord in my life when I was young my be I would not have mad a lot of mistake but will say god is with me now and if go can change me he can do the same for you. I talk a lot to the youth in my church in I am still young my self 35 Lol but I tell the older people in my church that we need to spend more time in talkin to the youth in our church be if we do not who will carry on ?

    1. That’s the whole point. If you wait for all others to get on board, you will lose sight of what you really are beingcalled and challenged to do. Jesus is Lord and Savior, and He chose 12 to teach and train for 3+ years as well as an additional 40 days after resurrecting. Yes there were more than twelve followers, but He selected twelve whom He personally chose for a special training and assignment by which His church experienced its birth in what we see as the “early church.” How many do you need? Start with those who share your spirit and sense a need to do something. Start with prayer. Pray for guidance and clarity. You have to let His Spirit lead you to new dimensions of His work for you. Faith is active belief as I understand. let your belief be activated and take the right actions with the right people. Let me know how it goes. I am in prayer with you. He can supply you with all that you need.

  6. Jesus is a good example, but he is more than that. He is sovereign and savior. In other words it’s not – what would Jesus do? It’s – what has Jesus done? It’s not the gospel of you. It’s the gospel of Jesus. We don’t preach ourselves, but Jesus. We need less good advice and more good news!

    1. You are speaking the truth. If we believe it to be the Good News, we need to realize that it is to be shared and spread by us as believers. I am in agreement with you. Bless you for your words of truth.
